We have received our Third "Tell Us Your Story" submission.
TELL US YOUR STORY #3:

Bullies aren't always children....

It was the first day of third grade in a new school. We had just moved into the neighborhood that summer. I don't know what scared me, but something did. I cried all day. I sobbed. I still remember how badly my chest hurt. I paired off with another student who would watch over me the rest of the day.

The next day the teacher asked if I would be crying all day again or if she would be able to teach her class. I didn't cry. I was scared. The third day she asked me again. I was scared then, too. The fourth day things began to fall into place. Work was given. Students learned. I didn't know how to pronounce this word - stupid - in the reading lesson. ""It's what you are,"" I was told in front of the class. My desk was moved beside the teacher's desk. When work was given I was asked if I understood it or if I was too stupid to understand anything. With every lesson came a derogatory remark about my intelligence. I don't remember a lot from third grade. There are clear moments when I was told I was stupid or dumb or shouldn't have been promoted to third grade. I was an "A" student in my old school.  I became withdrawn. I isolated. I started to believe what I was told.

My parents didn't understand how I my interest in school could change so much, but it was never the adults that were blamed or scrutinized, it was me. I remember yelling that I hated her. I remember saying it wasn't me. My parents had meetings with the Principal, with the teacher. There were other complaints. I wasn't the only student being bullied by this teacher.

Four months into the school year, a new third grade class was started. Students from each class were moved to a new room with a new teacher. This teacher listened. This teacher asked questions. This teacher was surprised that I was smart - not stupid. This new teacher didn't understand why I did so poorly in the old teacher's classroom.

The damage was done. Years later when I'm about to begin a new endeavor there's a voice in the back of my head. "You're stupid," it says. "You're too dumb to understand." If I fail, that voice says, "I told you, you're an idiot." I argue with that voice every time I try something new. No one should hear that voice - ever!

Don't let your child hear that voice.

We have received our second "Tell Us Your Story" submission.

TELL US YOUR STORY #2:

What it it about Junior High School that made bullies so interested in me? Is there a bully hormone? Or is it just puberty?

I remember one kid, smaller than me, thinner, too. He used to spit. I think he spit at every kid in the seventh and eighth grades. He would stand in the school bus on the seat and spit at kids as they walked underneath him. I go it right in the eye one day. Of course, he and his friends laughed. I wasn't allowed to spit. I wasn't allowed to fight. I remember being given stern orders: "Don't spit! That's disgusting!" and "Don't fight! What are you an animal?" In the back of my head I can still hear those lines being repeated. What was I supposed to do when this little kid spit at me? Can't spit back. Can't fight. Okay, let it go. I remember thinking that this kid must have been raised in a zoo or that he was raised like an animal because I wasn't allowed to spit or fight. Didn't he have anyone to tell him what was right and what was wrong?

Is that what bullying was or is really about? They do it because they've never been told that they can't or that they shouldn't do something. Didn't their parents care if people thought they were disgusting or that they were animals raised in a zoo?

I didn't ask for help. The bus driver was on the bus when the kid was spitting out the window. Nothing was said. The Teacher on bus duty was on the sidewalk as we all walked to our buses. Nothing was said. Other kids laughed at what's going on - "better someone else than them."

My resolution to the problem came when I started walking home from school. It wasn't that far. If I avoided the bus, then I avoided the disgusting animal raised in a zoo that spits on everyone.

When it rained? I took the bus and got spit on or I walked in the rain.

When it snowed? Walking home in the snows was always fun. "

What did you think of our first "Tell Us Your Story"? It took a lot of guts for someone to share their situation.

Monday, May 13, 2013

We have received our first "Tell Us Your Story" submission.

TELL US YOUR STORY #1:

It was junior high school. The beginning of the day. The beginning of every day. There's a muscle on the thigh, that when kneed just right, causes a Charlie-horse. Well, there was this one kid, he wasn't cool; he wasn't a jock; he wasn't a ""dirt bag"" either, but other kids liked him and thought he was funny. I guess he was the ""evil"" class clown. Every day as I walked to my locker he would walk beside me trying to knee me in the thigh to give me a Charlie-horse. I was the chubby kid. The boy with man boobs. The kid that was easy to pick on. I didn't fight back. I didn't know how to fight back. I let it happen.

Occasionally he was joined by another boy; a jock, someone that wanted to be cool, someone that needed to prove that he could do this to someone or that he was better than someone. I was never really sure which it was for either of them. I don't remember any fights or altercations. I don't even remember talking to them before this happened. Maybe they didn't like my face.

I didn't ask for help. The teachers would line up in the hallway before first period. The ones that stood beside their classrooms as I walked to my locker didn't say or do anything - not one of them. I remember strange looks. I remember them turning their heads in the other directions.

You would think that one of them would pull one of us aside to say something. Anything. "Punch him, I won't say anything." "Beat him up and I'll turn the other way." Or even, "Hey, stop doing that to his leg." Nothing was said. Nothing was done.

I've always found that interesting; sad, but still interesting.

It ended when we moved up to high school. The same way I'm not sure why it started, I don't remember why it stopped.

I often wonder if this daily incident affected me. As I write this, I wonder if it affected him. Did he feel stronger, better, smarter? Does he look back and say, "I shouldn't have done that to him"?

I wonder...
